Active Voice
In the active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action of the verb. This is the most straightforward and common structure. The basic structure is:
Subject + verb + object.
Example:
- The chef (subject) cooked (verb) the meal (object).
Passive Voice
In the passive voice, the object of the action becomes the subject of the sentence. The doer of the action may be mentioned later in the sentence, introduced by “by,” or may be omitted altogether. The basic structure is:
Subject + form of “to be” + past participle + (by + agent).
Example:
- The meal (subject) was cooked (verb) by the chef (agent).
What is the Difference between Active and Passive voice
Focus: In the active voice, the focus is on the subject performing the action. In the passive voice, the focus is on the action itself or the object receiving the action.
Verb Use: In active sentences, simple verbs are used. In passive sentences, a form of “to be” (e.g., is, was, were) followed by the past participle of the main verb is used.
